All is well. There have been a few disappointments, and a few good things to somewhat make up for that.
Friday we got to the airport and our flight wasn't called. After about 30 minutes they announced that it was delayed due to fog on Grimsey Island. They would check again in 30 minutes. 30 minutes later no progress and it would be an hour before another check was made. If it flew then, we would also return radially as late so that we would have some time on the island. We knew that we would be far too late getting to that night's lodging in that case, so cancelled or flight and got a refund.
Off we went at a leisurely pace to do some sightseeing and earthcaches. I mentioned something to Liz that I hadn't put on the list because we wouldn't have had time. Let's go see the marimos! She didn't know what they were, but was game to join me.
Ok - they are algae balls found in only two places they know of on earth. Lake Myvatn in Iceland and a lake in Japan.
We went to a bird museum which is where they had some. The lady was pleased that we knew about them and after a bit she took one out of the water to show us. She squeezed it like a sponge. I asked if I could hold it. Yes! So there we are on hand and knees by the pool off water in a stuffed bird museum, playing with marimos.
When something too special to put on you bucket list actually happens, that's exciting. Super exciting. Makes up for missing crossing the arctic circle and seeing puffins.
We stayed in a pod - a funny little hut - that night.
Maybe some more tomorrow. Just call me Marimo lady.
